The Fruit Shop – A Music Podcast hosted by @abefarquharson and @reubenmcfeeters.
The Idea
I really wanted to start a podcast to see how easy/hard it would be. I needed a co-host and Abe was keen. We are both very into our music so that became the obvious topic choice.
Set up: I bought x2 Audio-Technica ATR2100-USB microphones (£120) and used my Macbook with Garage band to record & edit. Filmed on a Sony A6000.
Structure: Having structure is key to a podcast. Each episode went like so: Intro music – Music News – New releases (track) – Best of the week (2 tracks each) – Up & Coming artist (1 artist each +track) = 30/35mins
We recorded 8 episodes in 8 weeks and quietly launched on our Instagram.
We didn’t get a lot of plays but are both loved doing it and are proud of the end result.
Takeaways
- Almost no setup costs or barriers to entry
- Super easy to get on major platforms (Apple & Spotify)
- Invest in good-ish mics (I was super happy with the sound quality)
- Editing takes a lot longer than expected
- Listeners are the key to a successful podcast
